The first of many, introducing Friday Find on BuddyDress

Today marks the first version of a new feature here at the BuddyDress blog which is ‘Friday Find’. Each Friday we’ll bring you the news from around the BuddyPress community that week along with some great links for things you can follow. This is all done in conjunction with our sister site wpmu.org. So, lets start off this Friday Find.

Ning says pay us or there is the door

Possibly one of the biggest potential stories for BuddyPress dropped yesterday with the announcement that Ning was closing it’s doors on free hosted users. Twitter and blogs were all of a noise over this move which sees many out in the cold in particular the smaller communities. Currently there are no actual plugins or suite of plugins that provide a good full solution however as James revealed in this post ‘Ning to BuddyPress / WordPress migration plugin’ over at WPMU DEV there is one brewing. This is simply great news for all the Ning people that are left out in the cold with this move by Ning. The existing situation isn’t perfect as outlined in ‘Helpful Resources for Ning Users’ there are 2 separate plugins that can work for parts of the move to BuddyPress.

Dive into the API with MrMaz

MrMaz over at the BuddyPress forums in ‘The BuddyPress next generation API, the journey begins’ is looking for input around this complex subject so feel free if you’re API / code minded to dive into the conversation. Even if it’s not your cup of tea it’s an interesting conversation to read if possibly a little technical in places.

WPMU.org is your daily dose of goodness

Sarah Gooding over at wpmu.org has been posting Daily Tips for a few weeks now and here’s just a few of the gems relating to BuddyPress this week:

‘How to display a link to the groups forum in the BuddyPress groups directory’
‘Want to run BuddyPress on multiple blogs in your WPMU install? Here’s how’
‘Getting a blank fatal error when activating Buddypress? Try this quick hack’

Help us Friday Find

Before we close this all up with some twitter goodness, we’d like to encourage people to submit links, sites, anything BuddyPress related for our Friday Finds. If you’re a member you can add to our Friday Find thread in the forum or if you’re not either use the wpmu.org.
